Ghost of Tsushima Will Launch With Multiplayer Cross-Play, But There’s a Catch

  • Ghost of Tsushima’s PC release includes a beta multiplayer mode with Legends, offering cross-play across platforms like PS4 and PS5.
  • Steam Deck users can enjoy the full single-player experience, including the Iki Island DLC.
  • Sony’s PSN account requirement for multiplayer caused pre-order refunds in some regions, raising concerns about future PlayStation to PC ports.

The online cooperative multiplayer mode for Ghost of Tsushima‘s highly anticipated PC version will launch under the beta feature label. Developer Sucker Punch’s critically acclaimed open-world samurai Action RPG is releasing on PC soon, and many players are looking forward to playing through Jin Sakai’s journey through the titular island of Tsushima. Now, less than 24 hours before Ghost of Tsushima‘s PC debut, the developer of the port revealed more details about what fans can expect.

While Ghost of Tsushima is best known for its thrilling campaign and storyline, the PC port additionally translated several other features from the original PlayStation title. This included a dedicated cooperative multiplayer experience with Legends mode, wherein players can choose between four unique classes and fulfill missions set in a world based on Japanese mythology. Previous updates from Sony confirmed Legends will come with cross-play between PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, though PC users will notably have to connect their Steam to a PlayStation Network account to access Ghost of Tsushima‘s multiplayer mode.

Nvidia Releases New Driver for Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut

PC gamers with Nvidia RTX GPUs can now access an updated driver for their graphics cards to provide the best Ghost of Tsushima experience.

On top of the PSN account requirement, the official Nixxes Software Twitter account also recently shared a post stating that Legends’ cross-play feature will only be in its beta phase upon Ghost of Tsushima‘s launch, meaning that, while it will be available on day one, PC players will not be automatically grouped with PlayStation users through the game’s matchmaking. Instead, they will be required to manually invite PSN users if they want to take full advantage of the feature. Nixxes Software did not specify how long the beta period is expected to last for Legends, but assured fans it would continue to adjust the online experience based on player feedback.

Ghost of Tsushima’s Single-Player is Fully Playable on Steam Deck

The developer additionally took the opportunity to assure fans that Ghost of Tsushima‘s single-player mode, which includes the Iki Island DLC expansion, will be fully playable on the Steam Deck despite the store page marking the game as unsupported for the platform. Nixxes Software claimed this was a result of the game’s PSN online account requirement, which crucially relied on a PC’s Windows features to access the PlayStation overlay for Ghost of Tsushima. As the single-player mode does not require a PSN login, players can thereby experience the full campaign on their respective handheld gaming devices without issue.

While many users are undoubtedly excited about Ghost of Tsushima‘s launch on PC, the run-up to the port’s release has been somewhat troubled. Just recently, Steam has begun auto-refunding Ghost of Tsushima pre-orders from countries where the title was delisted due to the game’s PSN account requirement for multiplayer, an incident which led to many players criticizing publisher Sony and voicing concerns on whether this will be the norm for other expected PlayStation to PC ports. Only time will tell how Sony’s latest decision will affect the PC port’s sales for Ghost of Tsushima.
