Apex Legends’ Broken Moon To Receive Big Changes In Season 21, As Devs Say It’s Like A “Brand-New Map”

Highlights

  • Apex Legends Season 21 brings a new Legend and major changes to the much-maligned Broken Moon map, promising a brand-new experience.
  • Respawn Entertainment is overhauling Broken Moon with fresh points of interest and a new landscape, aiming to alter the map’s identity.
  • Lead designer Steve Young describes the changes, including the removal of Promenade and the addition of the Containment Zone, offering new gameplay possibilities.

Season 21 of Apex Legends is right around the corner. The new content update is set to introduce a brand-new Legend to the Apex games, along with a returning fan-favourite limited-time mode, plenty of improvements, and some major changes to the existing Battle Royale map: Broken Moon.

After being released with the launch of Season 15, Broken Moon quickly picked up a reputation for being the “worse map in the game,” according to players. Its subdued color scheme, repetitive points of interest, and general complexity are just some of the reasons why fans have labelled this as the most disliked maps in the entire game.

But developer Respawn Entertainment appears to be focused on giving Broken Moon a brand-new look with Season 21, as the studio is completely overhauling the map with new points of interest and a new “exotic landscape.”

In a new blog post, Respawn Entertainment said its goal for Season 21 was “to bring a new combat experience throughout Broken Moon and within the new POIs, while also changing the identity of the map.” And changed its identity they have, as the devs say this is like a “brand-new map.”

Apex Legends Devs Discuss Broken Moon Changes

In a new interview with our sister site GameRant, Apex Legends’ lead level designer Steve Young explained the studio’s decision to completely nuke Promenade after noticing that players were completely avoiding the point of interest on Broken Moon.

When Season 21 launches next week, Promenade will be out and a new point of interest called Containment Zone will be in. Young described this new spot as a more “self-contained and compartmentalized POI.” When discussing the Broken Moon changes in further detail, Young said:

“We don’t have the chaotic zip lines, pass-throughs, chokes, and whatever that were leading players in and through that area anymore. Now it’s much more intentional and much more intuitive. As far as the rotations both in and around there are concerned, we now have really fun zip lines within the Containment Zone itself that are only used for rotational purposes within that POI. In my opinion, it’s the most fun use of those.”

The dev then explained that Respawn wanted Broken Moon to be more visually distinct compared to the game’s other maps. “The biome refresh just looks and feels like a brand new map compared to where it was before,” Young said.

As for how this new point of interest plays, Young said it “plays great” and is “very well laid out” which means players will be able to come up with some fun, creative strategies. “If you need to quickly rotate and get out of there, you can do that too. It’s not a death trap anymore like it was before,” the dev explained.
