As Warcraft turns 30, Blizzard has preemptively canceled BlizzCon for 2024

See, not all things are the same.

Well, you can read the headline: There’s no BlizzCon this year after all, in spite of the fact that this is Warcraft’s 30th anniversary and World of Warcraft’s 20th and there are actually major releases coming from the studio this year.

“After careful consideration over the last year, we at Blizzard have made the decision not to hold BlizzCon in 2024,” the company says. “This decision was not made lightly as BlizzCon remains a very special event for all of us, and we know many of you look forward to it. While we’re approaching this year differently and as we have explored different event formats in the past, rest assured that we are just as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in future years.”

Instead, the studio says it’ll be attending other events like Gamescom and Dreamhack, where it’ll hype World of Warcraft’s The War Within and Diablo IV’s Vessel of Hatred. As for those anniversaries, players can expect to see them commemorated with “multiple, global, in-person events” this year, in addition to the in-game events.

Readers will remember that BlizzCon has had a spotty history over the last few years. BlizzCon 2019 was overshadowed by the then-ongoing Blitzchung imbroglio, BlizzCon 2020 was canceled thanks to COVID, BlizzCon 2021 was a weird online event, BlizzCon 2022 was canceled, and then BlizzCon 2023 seemed like a return to form.
