The wartorn island nation of Lamang has numerous factions fighting in its active battlefields, and players in Gray Zone Warfare can pledge their allegiance to one of these groups. While such a decision doesn’t have that big of an impact on latent game systems, faction choice decides whether or not you’ll be able to play with your friends on the same squad.

If you want to take on Gray Zone Warfare’s challenges together, then you’ll all need to be in the same faction. Members of rival groups cannot work together. Thankfully, faction switching does exist, though it comes with one big caveat.

As of writing, you can join a different faction at any point in the game, but you can only do so by wiping your current character. Go to the game’s main menu, and on the bottom right side of the screen, you’ll see an option to wipe your character. This will delete your current operator, effectively resetting all the progress you’ve made thus far.

This will let you create a new character from scratch, and that includes the ability to choose a new faction. Previously, the game only allowed faction changes after a set amount of time. This was changed in one of the first hotfixes for the game following high community demand. Character wiping is irreversible, and it has a one-hour cooldown between uses.

So far, quests in Gray Zone Warfare play out similarly regardless of which faction. The starter quests in particular all have the same objectives, but since factions have different base locations on the map, players will have to visit different grid coordinates to do their Vendor tasks. Gear is also homogenous across factions — everyone gets access to the same weapons and equipment regardless of what organization they join.

The most important thing affected by your choice of faction is co-op availability. Players have no choice but to join the same group if they want to squad up and conquer Lamang together. Factions may get more fleshed ou in the future, however.
