Grounded: How To Get Ant Eggs And What They Do

In Grounded, ants are everywhere. These cute critters crawl all over the backyard, open-world setting with their curious temperament, but their eyes turn red and angry when provoked, and often prove there’s strength in numbers when they’re at their most deadly. However, although sometimes they’re best left alone, players need to venture into their lairs to retrieve red ant eggs to progress in the game and access new or hidden areas.

Updated April 18th, 2024: There are a ton of useful items that players need to collect in Grounded in order to progress through the game. One item, in particular, Ant Eggs, are used to craft explosives and players will need them to access certain areas. This makes finding Ant Eggs in Grounded a very important part of the journey, but grabbing them can be a bit difficult if players don’t know where to go or look. To better showcase how to get Ant Eggs in Grounded and how to make it out of areas with them, the following guide has been updated to include a companion video.

Where To Find Ant Eggs

Red Ant Hill And Tunnel Locations In Grounded

There are many ant hill tunnels and entrances around the backyard, so players won’t need to search too hard to find them. Players can find a small opening near the Oak Tree and there’s even a secret entrance through a broken window inside the Oak Lab where players first meet BURG.L, and where players can even find a milk molar. However, the best location for red ant eggs is the guarded anthill in the dry grass area to the west of the Mysterious Machine.

Once inside, players need to search the maze of ant tunnels for the eggs and may often see red worker ants carrying them. Ant eggs tend to be grouped near the red moss tunnel areas, and players can often find other goodies along the way like rotten bee armor by skeletal remains, and even the Anthill Grave Robbery BURG.L chip through a small hole in the floor. Players need to possess the tier 2 insect hammer to harvest any marble, quartzite, and elusive milk molars they may come across.

How To Get Ant Eggs

Make Ant Armour

One of the best ways of retrieving ant eggs with little fuss is to craft and equip the entire red ant armor set, including the helmet, knee guards, and red ant arm guards. This tricks the ants into thinking the player is one of their kin, and even red soldier ants defending their nests won’t attack unless provoked.

However, as soon as players grab the eggs, any witness nearby attacks, so the best strategy is to grab and run. If ants don’t see players take the eggs though, they won’t attack. To make ant armor, players need a mixture of mite fuzz, red ant parts, and acid glands, so need to kill a few red worker ants first.

Fight Red Soldier Ants

Players who don’t possess the full ant armor set will need to suit up in the best armor they have and be prepared to fight their way in. It’s also a good idea to prep healing recipes like bandages and smoothies using the Smoothie Station, like Questionable Slop and Fuzz on the Rocks.

Although red worker ants won’t attack players unless attacked, red soldier ants patrol ant hills and attack players on sight. Ants are more dangerous when fighting in large groups, so it’s best to isolate red soldier ants as much as possible without alerting nearby ants. They are tougher than worker ants but can go down in a few hits of a heavy weapon like the Red Ant Club.

Players can also try shooting ants from a distance with a bow and arrow and finish them off with stabbing attacks. If all else fails, players can simply run past them and speed run to the eggs before escaping.

Make A Torch

Players also need to craft a torch to light up the tunnels and find the eggs without too much trouble. To craft a basic torch, players need 2 sprigs, 1 sap, 2 strands of crude rope, and 3 dry grass chunks.

Players can hot-equip the torch for easy access and can hold a weapon like the pebblet spear simultaneously. Heavier weapons like the red ant club can’t be wielded at the same time as the torch, so players need to swap items as needed.

What Ant Eggs Do

Secret Tunnel Entrance Requiring Explosives In Grounded

One of the first things to know about ant eggs is they have a use-by date, so players must ensure they use them before the timer runs out, and they hatch into ants, which is a fun surprise to return home to.

The main function of ant eggs in Grounded is to make explosives using a workbench, such as the Bratburst, which players also need to make other types of explosives like the highly sticky Splatburst. To make a Bratburst, players need 1 red ant egg, 4 chunks of dry grass, and 2 fungal growths, which players can source from killing infected bugs like infected ladybirds.

Players need explosives like the Bratburst or Splatburst to open obstructed, stone doorways found throughout the yard and access new areas, such as the secret doorway near the hedge that leads to the tier 3 Pinch Whacker weapon, inside the Oakhill tree, and even a blocked entrance behind 2 acorns hidden to the east of the Mysterious Machine.

When players discover blank ants, they can use black ant eggs to make the Omelant, a breakfast-based delicacy and one of the best food recipes to make in the game.

Grounded is available to play now on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and is free to play on Xbox Game Pass.
