Help, I’ve Suddenly Become Obsessed With Completing Modern Warfare 3 Challenges

I’ve been a Call of Duty fan for what feels like my entire life. From the moment I played my first multiplayer match on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, I’ve been hooked ever since. Regardless of the developer or controversy surrounding the title each year, I’ve purchased every Call of Duty since.

In the early days of Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops 2, etc. it was all about getting the most amount of kills and going on the biggest killstreak possible. I’ll never forget the feeling of achieving my first Nuclear medal on Black Ops 2; the sweat on my hands, the adrenaline rushing through my body, it was the peak of Call of Duty. At least for me, anyway.

It’s time to stop getting angry at people for playing a team-based mode correctly.

After Black Ops 2, the franchise started to go on a downward spiral. From jetpacks to skill-based matchmaking, year after year there was one reason or another that made me lose my love for Call of Duty. While I’ve still played it every year since, I’ve never managed to get that addictive feeling that I got with the older titles. Until recently.

Weekly Challenges Have Got Me Weirdly Obsessed With Call Of Duty Again

Last week, I thought I’d boot up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (the 2023 release, not the original) and jump into some multiplayer. As usual, it only took a few games of getting absolutely shit on until I was ready to call it quits for another few weeks. Until I started browsing through the weekly challenges.

If you don’t know, for each week of the season (which usually consists of eight weeks), Call of Duty releases new weekly challenges for players to complete. They offer an abundance of XP and some aftermarket parts when you complete a certain number of challenges. While I’d never bothered to take the time to look at these challenges, I was well aware of their existence.

I thought I’d give a few of them ago and see how I got on. Bearing in mind, that we’re now in week five of the current season, so I was pretty far behind. Somehow, despite being an average player, I managed to complete five weeks worth of challenges in around three or four sessions. One of those sessions was well over 6 hours long, something I haven’t done since my teenage years, and boy did it feel good.

Goodbye Rage, Hello Enjoyment

It might sound silly, but becoming mildly obsessed with completing challenges has made me realise that there’s more to Call of Duty than just trying to be the best and getting angry when you die.

Some of the weekly challenges were so ridiculous that I questioned whether or not they were even possible. Hitting somebody with a Shock Stick and then killing them with a Lethal, for example, felt like it took me an eternity to complete. Attempting it probably tanked my K/D, but because I wasn’t trying to be good, I simply didn’t care. It was a refreshing feeling after spending years raging at Call of Duty, and gave me a new outlook on the game.

I’ve never bothered with grinding out weapon camos and completing the plethora of challenges available in each title, but I think it’s time I switch things up and actually start to enjoy Call of Duty again.
