Updated on May 7, 2024, by Ashely Claudino: The Fortnite map is constantly changing, and with the release of Chapter 5 Season 2 and the end of the holiday season, the snow melted away and many locations received several modifications, including the floating loot island that spawns mid-match. It no longer includes Crackshot’s Cabin, and it is a required locations for players attempting to complete all Star Wars quests, which is why this guide has been updated.

How to Capture the Loot Island in Fortnite

While players could find a Capture Point in the center of each named location back in Chapter 4, this is no longer the case. Capture Points haven’t been vaulted entirely, but there is only one location on the Chapter 5 map that gamers can claim at this point, and that’s the floating island.

The floating loot island spawns randomly on the Fortnite Battle Royale map once the third Storm Circle closes. This means that gamers have to outlast a significant number of players if they’d like to even get a chance to get onto the island and claim it. A few seconds before the loot island rifts onto the map, a marker will appear on players’ map telling them where they must go to find it.

Once gamers get onto the floating island, they’ll see a circle with a flag close to the ground. As soon as a player or the members of their team, step into the circle marked around the Capture Point, a meter will start to fill up until it’s full. Once the meter has reached its maximum, the location will be considered claimed.

If an enemy player steps into the circle, the meter will start going down which will prevent the location from being claimed. If this is the case they have to be removed either by luring them away or eliminating them.

The meter takes about a full minute to fill up; there is no way to make it go up faster, even if you get your teammates inside the circle. Capturing a location can take a while so it’s important to stay alert and be on the lookout for enemies that might be ready to attack.

How Claimed Locations Work in Fortnite

As soon as a location has been claimed, tons of loot will spawn on the floor. If they’re part of a duo, trio, or squad, more goodies will appear. However, this isn’t the only good part about claiming a location. For a few moments after claiming a POI, the players that have captured the location will able to see the chests and the enemies nearby highlighted – it even works through walls.

This prevents the player’s team from getting attacked by surprise by enemies that could be lurking in their surroundings and it helps spot chests in the location.
