How to Find Megalodons in Sea of Thieves

The Megalodon, or Meg, is a ferocious sea monster in Sea of Thieves that chases down and attacks ships. Its massive jaws can hit your boat like a battering ram and rip your beloved pirate ship to shreds by peppering holes in it. However, if you want to find a Megalodon in Sea of Thieves, it’s not necessarily an easy task. More often than not, a Meg will discover you first. However, there are some things you can do to help find a Meg, whether you want to experience a Meg battle for the first time, hunt several for commendations, or even try and track down the elusive Shrouded Ghost.

How to Find Megalodons in Sea of Thieves

fight with megaladon

Megalodons are a random or chance encounter in Sea of Thieves, meaning they spawn seemingly at random. Therefore, unlike active Sea of Thieves World Events, there is no guarantee one will show up, so anyone hoping to find a Megalodon may have to wait a while. However, for the best chances of one spawning, you’ll want to sail out to open sea and avoid staying close to islands. Unlike sharks, Megs can’t swim near islands. Sailing to an island is an effective strategy if you’re trying to escape a pursuing Meg but generally won’t spawn or swim anywhere near them. However, one exception to that rule is Sea Forts, where Meg can sometimes spawn and swim pretty close by.

Community site Merfolk’s Lullaby’s interactive Meg map handily tracks Megalodon spawn locations in Sea of Thieves, so you could try sailing around one of these areas to see if a Meg shows up. That said, given Meg’s spawn locations are random, there is still no guarantee of finding one.

If a Meg is near your ship, chances are you’ll probably hear it before you see it with the change in music. Look out for a sinister, foreboding tune that appears out of nowhere, and check the surrounding waters of your ship. If there’s a Meg, it’ll soon poke its head out of the water for a massive roar and start circling you. You can try to outrun a Meg or attack it, but it will charge and ram if you antagonize it with firepower.

Is The Shrouded Ghost Real?

The Shrouded Ghost is an extremely rare white and light pink Meg in Sea of Thieves with a low spawn rate. As a result, whether it is real is a long-running joke within the Sea of Thieves community, given many players who’ve played the game for years have never encountered one. Images, footage, and commendations connected to the Shrouded Ghost suggest it’s the real deal. While it was only possible to summon Sea of Thieves‘ Shrouded Ghost in a previous Adventure, it’s purely down to a chance whether one will spawn, so you’ll have to wait and see if you’re lucky enough to see one.
