McLaren feared sprint race crash damage would rule Norris out of qualifying

Lando Norris’ crash at the start of yesterday’s sprint race almost prevented him from taking part in qualifying for the grand prix, his team has revealed.

The McLaren driver was involved in a four-car collision at the first corner which ended his race immediately. He was driving the only MCL38 which had the complete upgrade package introduced by the team this weekend.

Team principal Andrea Stella admitted he was concerned Norris would not be able to start the race, and thanked the team’s mechanics for their quick repair job in the three-and-a-half hour window between the sprint race finishing and the start of Q1.

“I want to take this opportunity to praise the incredible work in the garage to prepare Lando’s car after the damage it suffered at the start of the sprint,” said Stella after qualifying. “There were moments where it looked like he wouldn’t be able to take part this afternoon, but the work done by the mechanics, with great support from the factory, was excellent and has put us in a strong position for tomorrow’s race.”

Norris qualified fifth, alongside team mate Oscar Piastri. “We had hoped for a little more, after a strong performance yesterday,” said Stella, “but there is potential for a strong race from fifth and sixth on the grid. The pace Oscar displayed in the sprint gives us encouragement for tomorrow.”

Both Aston Martin cars were also damaged in the incident. Lance Stroll joined Norris in retirement while Fernando Alonso circulated at the rear of the field.

“The damage to Lance’s floor and suspension forced his retirement, while Fernando resumed to give us some valuable learning on the tyres,” said team principal Mike Krack. Both their cars also took part in qualifying.
