Naruto: 7 Most Draining Abilities & Moves

Highlights

  • A ninja’s strength is measured by endurance and chakra reserves, shown through powerful techniques like Creation Rebirth & Amenominaka.
  • Technique advancements like Ultra Big-Ball Rasenshuriken and Indra’s Arrow combine chakra mastery and physical ability in battles.
  • Sacrificial jutsus like One’s Own Life Reincarnation and Samsara of Heavenly Life have intense consequences in exchange for revival.

A ninja’s strength is ascertained through a number of different metrics, ranging from the variety and potency of the techniques in their arsenal, to their raw physical abilities, intellect, strategic acumen, endurance, and chakra reserves. The last two parameters are especially relevant when it comes to higher classes of shinobi in Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto, where battles between powerful ninja are often tests of endurance alongside strength and strategy.

Capable of fighting long and arduous battles against the strongest opponents, these are the individuals with the most endurance in the series.

From this perspective, the extent of a ninja’s abilities also hinges on how well they can perform chakra taxing techniques, which either deal significant damage to their opponents or yield some other sort of immense benefit. Powerful shinobi such as Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Hashirama Senju, and Madara Uchiha, often relied on chakra-intensive techniques to decide fights against strong opponents, so in this line of reasoning, here are the most draining abilities and moves in the series.

7 Ninja Art Creation Rebirth — Strength of a Hundred Technique

Requires Several Years’ Worth Of Stored Chakra

Tsunade's Mitotic Regeneration Jutsu in Naruto

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #577

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #333

Taking the pinnacle of medical ninjutsu one step further, the Ninja Art Creation Rebirth — Strength of a Hundred Technique, also known as Ninja Art: Mitotic Regeneration: One Hundred Healings, is a potent regeneration technique developed by Tsunade. With it, she is one of the two medical-nin — alongside her student Sakura Haruno — who can defy the laws governing medical ninjutsu practitioners.

In essence, this technique releases chakra stored in the user’s Byakugou Seal, to stimulate cell division and heal all injuries instantly without any conscious effort from the user, making them temporarily immortal. The caveat here is that the seal must have several years’ worth of chakra in order to safely activate the technique.

6 Amenominaka

Exhausts Even Kaguya Otsutsuki’s Massive Chakra Reserves

Kaguya switches dimensions with her attack

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #679

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #459

Perhaps the most powerful space-time ninjutsu technique in existence, Kaguya’s Amenominaka allows her to transport any one of her six personal dimensions towards herself and any other targets as per her desire. Naturally, the task of moving entire dimensions consumes significant volumes of chakra, which is why repeated use of this technique can prove taxing even for her, despite the truly colossal reserves of chakra she possesses.

From this angle, it could be said that each use of the technique allows her to rewrite reality itself as she sees fit. For those trapped within the technique, the switch from one dimension to another is instantaneous and quite jarring, to the point where they may even perceive it to be genjutsu. It also maintains the relative positions of those caught within it, although Kaguya can use the environment of each realm to her advantage, by choosing where her targets emerge within the dimension relative to her.

5 Six Paths: Ultra Big-Ball Rasenshuriken

Siphons Most Of Naruto And Kurama’s Chakra Into One Attack

Six Paths Rasenshuriken

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #696

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #477

One of the most powerful techniques in Naruto Uzumaki’s arsenal begins with him using Six Paths Sage Mode while fully transformed into an avatar of Kurama. After creating two shadow clones, Naruto merges them into a three-faced, six-armed form, with a Six Paths Big-Ball Rasenshuriken in one arm, and a Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken in the other. Both Rasenshuriken are also infused with natural energy.

Maturing from a rebellious prankster to a hero who saved the shinobi world, Naruto’s journey during the series is as remarkable as it is inspiring.

This technique required Kurama to amass a significant amount of senjutsu chakra to commence. Additionally, once executed, the jutsu was strong enough to clash evenly with Sasuke Uchiha’s most powerful ability, Indra’s Arrow. The resulting explosion destroyed most of the Valley of the End where the battle was taking place, and exhausted the majority of Naruto and Kurama’s chakra at the time.

4 Indra’s Arrow

Sasuke Needed Every Single Tailed Beast’s Chakra To Perform It

Indra's Arrow

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #696

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #477

Undoubtedly the strongest offensive technique that Sasuke Uchiha can execute, Indra’s Arrow is a massive Lightning Release jutsu that requires a monumental amount of chakra to perform, given its sheer scale and destructive potential. The execution of this technique commences with Sasuke siphoning chakra from all the imprisoned tailed beasts, after which he funnels their chakra into his Complete Body — Susanoo.

This alters the appearance of his Susanoo to the point where its armor appears to be filled with an avatar of lightning-natured chakra. Next, Sasuke forms a longbow with an accompanying arrow, composed of the same lightning chakra, which he then directs towards his opponent. When released, the force of the arrow was enough to collide evenly with Naruto’s Six Paths: Ultra Big-Ball Rasenshuriken, even in spite of Lightning Release’s inferiority to Wind Release.

3 One’s Own Life Reincarnation

Revives Someone In Exchange For All The User’s Chakra

Chiyo Saves Gaara

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #274

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #27

Initially developed by Chiyo as a means to enhance the combat abilities of Sunagakure’s Puppet Brigade, the One’s Own Life Reincarnation Technique is a kinjutsu that effectively allows the user to bring a recently deceased person back to life. It essentially transfers the user’s life force into the target, with their chakra as an intermediary.

The drawback here is that the user must give up all of their chakra in exchange for the dead person’s soul, in an act that will inevitably result in their own death. Moreover, the technique can also be used on the living to save them from conditions that would otherwise be fatal, and even here, the technique will leave the user extremely exhausted but with a higher chance of survival. A third party can also assist if the amount of chakra in the user’s body is inadequate, but only the main caster will die. Chiyo was the only person who knew how to use the technique, and her sacrifice to revive Gaara ensured that this jutsu would be lost forever.

2 Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique

Uses The Rinnegan’s Outer Path To Revive Others In Exchange For The User’s Life

Nagato Rinne Rebirth

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #449

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #174

A reincarnation ninjutsu available only to those who possess the divine power of the Rinnegan, the Outer Path — Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, uses the King of Hell to revive the dead in exchange for the user’s life force. Even those who have not completely passed on and are at the crossroads between life and death can be called back to their living bodies through this technique.

Reflecting Naruto’s coming-of-age, this moment was a turning point in Part II, featuring the epic introductions of Sage Mode and the Rinnegan.

The limitations governing this technique are a bit unclear, since the two people to canonically use it in the series, did so under slightly different sets of rules. In Nagato’s case, he was able to revive many people from Konoha in exchange for his own life, which was already nearing its end. On the other hand, Obito brought an Edo Tensei Madara back to life, and was able to survive for a time due to the influence of Black Zetsu along with Naruto’s Six Paths Yang Power. However, he also passed away eventually, indicating that this technique is always fatal for the caster.

1 Eight Gates Released Formation

Allows Users To Transcend Human Limits Before Reducing Them To Ash

Might Guy opening the Eight Gates

Manga Debut

Naruto Chapter #668

Anime Debut

Naruto Shippuden Episode #419

The most powerful form attained by those who practice Konoha’s Strong Fist taijutsu, the Eight Gates Released Formation opens all the user’s Eight Inner Gates by puncturing their chests at a point just above the heart. Subsequently, a bloody steam emerges from different parts of their body shrouding them in a violent red aura, as the user removes all of their limiters, allowing tremendous amounts of chakra to flow throughout their pathway system.

As a result, the user gains physical abilities on an entirely new level, to the point where they can move fast enough to bend space-time itself. With their heart pumping at maximum power, the user’s strength and speed are augmented a hundred-fold. Unfortunately, the strain this puts on the body, causes it to overheat to fatal levels, burning them up from the inside, until they become a charred husk and inevitably die.
