Not Even The Player Can Trust Apex Legends’ Newest Legend Alter, Says Writer

Apex Legends Season 21: Upheaval releases May 7. As usual, there is a new battle pass and new cosmetics. The most exciting part about Season 21, though, is undoubtedly the release of the game’s 26th legend, Alter.

The lore of Alter is shrouded in uncertainty. Her chaotic personality sees her change her backstory whenever questioned, cycling between various motivations and traumas. We see some of Alter’s many fake backstories in her launch trailer.

At one point in the video, Alter claims to have been a hunter of the Old Way, with a pet bird. This background is obviously ripped from Bloodhound, a clear indication of the unreliable nature of Alter. In an interview with Game Rant, Alter’s narrative writer Jaclyn Seto teased some information about the new legend’s background.

“You hear this at the end of her trailer, where she’s there for the end of the world,” Seto begins. “She really loves seeing the ends of worlds. That’s something you’re quickly going to see with her voice lines and everything. It was really about figuring out why she likes seeing these worlds ending and building the backstory in order to get her there. Of course, I can’t reveal why she likes the ends of worlds, but I think you’ll find out soon enough.”

Major changes are coming to Broken Moon when Season 21 launches next week.

We’ve already seen Alter’s kit, which is themed around phasing and bypassing walls. Alter’s tactical allows her and her allies to phase through solid surfaces, enabling creative entrances into firefights. With her passive, Alter can take one item from death boxes she sees through walls.

Alter’s ultimate places down a nexus relay which can be teleported back to at any time by Alter and her teammates. However, teleporting back drops a relay that can be used by enemies to follow.

When Season 21 launches, players are going to become more familiar with Alter and her peculiarities. There may be a temptation to begin taking her at her word – Seto’s advice? Don’t.

“I think there will be times when you’ll want to trust her, but whether or not you can is dicey,” she remarks.
