PlayStation State of Play announced for Janaury 31st, and may include a new Metro VR game

UPDATE: Sony has confirmed that a State of Play will indeed be taking place on January 31st in a PlayStation Blog post penned by Head of PlayStation Studios Hermen Hulst.

The event will be 40 minutes long and feature guest appearances from “some of the most talented minds in gaming.” Hermen also promises “a new look at other titles coming to PS5 and PS VR2 in 2024 and beyond. “

games confirmed to be at the show included Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin, both of which are coming to PS5 this year.

ORIGINAL STORY: According to several reliable insiders, PlayStation will be hosting a State of Play this week where they’ll show off a few upcoming games, along with a new virtual reality title set in the Metro universe.

Rand Al Thor and Nick of of Xbox Era have both stated they believe it will occur on or around the 31st of January. Nick had some fun with his Tweet by hinting at the various games going to be shown, while Rand Al Thor decided to just list them.

According to Rand and Nick, the games we can expect to see are:

  • Rise of the Ronin
  • Death Stranding 2
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Sonic Generations Remaster
  • Silent Hill 2
  • New Metro game
  • Judas

Nick’s Tweet also specifically references Until Dawn, which would presumably be the recently rumoured Until Dawn project which is said to be bringing the game natively to PS5 and to PC, tying in with the recently announced Until Dawn movie. According to the rumours, this new version of Until Dawn is due to be announced very soon.

Judas is, of course, the name of the upcoming game from Ken Levine and his studio Ghost Story games. We haven’t too much of the game over the years, so hopefully we might get a deeper look into the studio’s debut title.

The mention of a new Metro game is interesting because another reliable leaker, Kurakasis, recently mentioned that a new Metro VR game, Metro Awakening, is being developed. The series’ developer 4A has been part of the collapsing Embracer group since 2020 and is rumoured to be working on another Metro game, although as a Ukranian studio they’ve surely had bigger concerns that have impacted development. 4A does have experience with VR games, though.

On the other hand, it could be Vertigo games that are making this Metro spin-off. They are also part of Embracer and specialise in VR games like Arizona Sunshine and After the Fall. Last November a job listing from Vertigo stated that they had entered “pre-production on a high-profile, multi-platform AAA VR game based on a globally recognized franchise.”  While it’s purely speculation, that description would fit Metro perfectly.

However, Insider Gaming claims to have some exclusive information which confirms that the Metro VR game is indeed being handled by 4A.

Considering how long it is been since we last saw the Metro franchise, I can’t imagine people will be excited by the announcement of a VR game, no matter how good it looks. A true Metro sequel has been highly anticipated, so I have a sad feeling that, if the news turns out to be accurate, fans will be let down.

With that said, the Metro franchise certainly lends itself to an atmospheric, creepy VR experience.
