Presencias (2022)

Presencias is a Mexican suspense/Horror movie that came out in 2022 in the language of spanish. Means “presences” in english.

How I watched: Vix

For the short of it: This movie is about a man who heads back to his childhood cabin but gets confuzzled when the whole town is one big Horror mob. Oh, and murder.

Yeah so for the first time on this blog I am finally able to watch a movie from Vix. I had no idea what it was until T-Mobile offered Vix Premium free for a year as one of their perks a few months back. Think of Vix like a spanish version of Tubi. Both are free to watch and ad supported. If you don’t know spanish, you’re going to have a tough time navigating Vix. Guess which one I fell under? If a dummy like me can do it, you can too. Context clues goes a long way.

Well, let’s get on to the movie. Presencias is one of the handful of Vix originals. So this movie is about a man named Victor, who is a big movie star,  and is tasked to get his ducks in order so he can sell the family’s cabin in the woods. However, this cabin is the source of his childhood trauma as he witnessed his sister drown in a nearby lake. His mother has also since passed away so all the family that he has left now is his little brother, Manolo, and his dad who totally looks like a mexican Sean Connery.

Victor, along with his wife, Alicia, take the road trip to the precious cabin but shit takes a dark turn when Victor wakes up in the hospital and being told his wife was murdered and like whaaaat? Not only that but she was newly pregnant so that kind of sucks.

After some time has passed and is mostly recovered, he makes the decision to go back to this desolate town to get to the bottom of it.

Only problem is that the police don’t take took kindly with him scooby doo-ing around here and on top of that he has a neighbor who totally blames his family for his wife’s death. Also his granddaughter is a creepy little girl. So poor Victor has an uphill battle with literally everyone. That is, except his childhood nanny, Maria and a local shop keeper named Paulina who aids him when he becomes a damsel in distress lol. For real though, she’s a real one.

That’s pretty much the gist of Presencias. During the course of this 2 hour movie, he is tortmented by flashes of his trauma and starts hallucinating weird shit that discombobulates his justice boner for Alicia. He’s totally not having a good time.

Overall, it’s an okay movie. It’s got your usual jumpscares. They didn’t really utilize a whole lot of the creepy kid angle as I thought they would, only when it suits the scene or something but I think it was better left out because it honestly didn’t add a whole lot to the overall scheme of things.

The ending was probably the most disturbing part and I guess I say that lightly for once. Without giving too much away, it ended with a series 911 phone calls but the further it progressed the more real sounding it felt. Most of those bits in your usual movie of choice sound blatantly fake but this is that rare time where I am actually not 100% sure if these calls were authentic. I tried looking up if this movie was loosely based on a true story but nah, nothing to back it up. I don’t want to say too much but it was an interesting twist albeit expected if you really think about it.

Part of me likes the way the movie ended but the events leading up to it felt like a lot of plot holes to be had but even then that *COULD* be explained away as well but still…key things irked me about the progression but eh whatever. I could take it or leave it. 

It honestly felt like this movie was trying to be one thing but halfway through the movie it changed coarse for whatever reason. I’ll just leave it that. Real hit or miss. Interesting execution tough.

With that being said, what is my verdict?
