Remedy Cancels Its Multiplayer Project Codename Kestrel

Remedy, the studio behind Alan Wake and Control, announced the cancellation of its multiplayer project simply known as Codename Kestrel, of which very few details were known.

Amidst so much turbulence in the gaming industry, several studios of all sizes are working on projects that aren’t even officially announced until they are ready. Sometimes, even these projects fail to take off and are canceled before we can discover they existed.

A Change Of Course For Remedy Entertainment

The news was made public through a statement released by Remedy, where the studio’s CEO, Tero Virtala, explained the reasons behind this cancellation. “The decision to cancel Codename Kestrel allows Remedy to focus more on other games in its portfolio,” said Virtala.

According to the executive, this game was a promising project, but it had not yet passed the concept stage. Remedy clarified that the rest of its projects are still underway, and the staff working on Codename Kestrel will be transferred to these other projects.

This project was being financed by the Chinese giant Tencent, but it is still unclear what role this company will play in the company’s future after this cancellation, considering that Tencent had recently increased its stake in Remedy’s shares. Little was known about Codename Kestrel as a game.

Initially, this project was announced under the name of Vanguard as a cooperative online free-to-play title, but last year the project was rebooted, and along with its name change, it was also mentioned that it would become a premium title. Codename Kestrel would use many of the elements already designed for Vanguard, such as its gameplay mechanics.

According to comments made in the initial announcement of Vanguard, this game would be Remedy’s first approach to the world of games as a service.

Now, the only multiplayer title still in development at the studio will be the project Codename Condor, a PvE game based on the Control universe. On the other hand, the studio is also working on remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2, while also preparing DLC content for Alan Wake 2.
