Scuderia Ferrari History In Shades Of Blue

Scuderia Ferrari’s livery for the Miami Grand Prix will be in blue. But what are the reasons behind this choice and what it represents?

Scuderia Ferrari announced that the livery and the merchandising for the race in Miami won’t be in the red of Rosso Corsa. The SF-24 will be in shades of blue. The team chose two colours that are very dear to the Cavallino: Azzurro Dino and Azzurro La Plata. These are historical colours of the team of Maranello, with a lot of symbolism, and they’re perfect for the Grand Prix in the USA.

But why the blue in North America?

Ferrari red is iconic, but it’s not the only shade in which the team has won. At least, not in America.

Back in the 60s, the Italian team decided to quit the usual red for another colour as a protest against the FIA who did not approve the 250 LM.  The car was supposed to race in Gran Turismo with the colours of the North America Racing Team, at the time Ferrari’s partner. And naturally, its colours were white and blue.

For the last two races in 1964 in the USA and Mexico, the Ferraris were blue. Not only that, but the Scuderia won the Championship with John Surtees wearing blue. The driver became the World Champion on that occasion, too.

For the next season, Ferrari went back to the usual red and the blue disappeared. At least until now, because the team decided to bring it back to celebrate the 70th anniversary with the motorsport world in North America.

Azzurro Dino and Azzurro La Plata

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will wear two special shades of blue which represent a homage to the Cavallino.

It was the team itself who explained the colour choice. Azzurro Dino is an intense shade of blue, chosen by many drivers during their time with Scuderia Ferrari, like Arturo Merzario and Clay Regazzoni, the last one to use it. It was also the colour of the uniforms in Maranello.

Azzurro La Plata is a lighter blue, “… the national colour of the cars of the Argentine teams. It’s a similar shade to the one Alberto Ascari brought in races in his most winning seasons, wearing a blue shirt and helmet was his lucky charm”.

Moreover, back in the ’60s, the drivers used this shade for their Racing suits, from Surtees to Nicki Lauda.

A real nod to the past, to the glory days of Scuderia Ferrari and to the drivers who made history. And not only wearing red.
