Sea of Thieves‘ Maiden Voyage tutorial introduces new players to various controls and mechanics of the game, from digging up treasure to sailing your ship for the first time. However, while you might be eager to complete the tutorial and reach the Sea of Thieves as fast as possible, there are many tutorialsecrets and rewards to discover before jetting off elsewhere. Some include special rewards like sails and outfit additions, but most are achievements known as Commendations.

Treasure hunting and uncovering secrets are a big part of the Sea of Thieves puzzle-solving experience, so the tutorial is also a great time to start thinking like a pirate to get even more treasure and rewards. The hidden journals also tell you more about the lore and history of Sea of Thieves.

Sea Of Thieves Tutorial Secrets And Commendations (Maiden Voyage Walkthrough)

There are 10 Commendations to complete in Sea of Thieves’ Maiden Voyage tutorial. You can unlock these by uncovering various secrets hidden around the tutorial island, Old Sailor’s Isle, locating hidden journals, finding a secret treasure cache, and more.

You begin the tutorial by talking to the Pirate Lord to learn the basic controls of the game, including accessing the tool wheel to replenish health, equipping some of Sea of Thieves‘ best weapons, like the Cutlass, and digging up a treasure chest containing the rest of your gear by following a treasure map. After you’ve got all your pirate gear, instead of speaking to the pirate lord again to start fixing your boat, now is the time to explore and uncover the island’s secrets. Doing so can net you some awesome commendations and other rewards.

A Fine Catch

Learning to fish in Sea of Thieves can feel tricky, so now’s a good time to start. To begin, select your fishing rod from the tool wheel and cast a line. The trick with fishing is to pull the line in the opposite direction the fish swims, and the tutorial gives some pointers on how and when to start reeling in. To get the A Fine Catch commendation, you can catch any fish you like from most pools of water on the island or from the sea.

A Hearty Meal

Once you’ve caught one of Sea of Thieves‘ fish, you can cook it on the stove near where you first met the Pirate Lord to grab a commendation called A Hearty Meal. Select the fish from the tool wheel and place it into the pan to start cooking. You’ll know when it’s ready when it starts to turn brown. Be warned that undercooked food in Sea of Thieves will make your character vomit (another handy use for the bucket). Watch out for it burning, and try not to catch fire yourself.

Hidden Secrets

To unlock the Hidden Secrets commendation, climb up to the top deck of the broken ship and head to the small pool of water nearby on the left by crossing the fallen wooden post. Look up to see the ship’s sails ahead and dive into the pool to find the Old Sailor’s Key hidden in the underwater plants, as pictured above. It’s tricky to spot, so take your time. Take the key to the bottom of the broken ship and use it to unlock a floor hatch leading to a secret treasure room containing three gold chests to collect, plus a journal.

Saluting the Pirate Lord

Grab one of Sea of Thieves‘ cannonballs from the red cannonball barrel in the broken ship and head up to the top deck. Load the cannon with a cannonball and fire it anywhere to grab the Saluting the Pirate Lord commendation.

Pirate Lord Journals (A Storied Crossing) And Yer Boat Commendation

To get the A Storied Crossing commendation, you need to find and read 10 Pirate Lord journals hidden in various places and secret locations in the tutorial as follows:

Regarding Merfolk Journal

The Regarding Merfolk journal is located in the water by the broken ship on the beach, as pictured above, and close to where you dig up your pirate gear.

The Sea Of The Damned Journal

You can also find The Sea of The Damned journal inside a small cave behind the waterfall not far from where you first meet the Pirate Lord. Head inside to find the journal next to some skeleton remains.

My Secret Plan Journal

In the secret treasure room with the gold chests, you can also find the My Secret Plan journal propped up against a wooden stool.

So Near And Yet…Journal

Close to the wooden bridge of the broken ship, you can spy the So Near and Yet journal hidden next to a broken barrel.

They Gave It A Name Journal

Head to the top deck of the broken ship to find a journal called They Give It A Name located next to the ship’s wheel.

Head towards the wooden bridge connecting the second part of the island and descend the ladder on the right. The Lords of the Sea journal is in the bushes.

Making Camp Journal

Inside the second island, you can enter a secret, descending passage by opening the wooden door via a nearby lever. You can then find the Making Camp journal near the campfire inside.

A Ship That Fits Journal

The second island’s iron bars might seem impenetrable, but use the anchor and pulley systems to descend the secret passage further to find a hidden cave. Here, you can grab the Yer Boat commendation by sitting in the rowboat and find a journal called A Ship That Fits by climbing the ladder nearby.

Paintings From The Past Journal

You can spot the final journal, Paintings from the Past, at the top of the second part of the island.

Return to the Pirate Lord to complete the rest of the tutorial and get the Unto The Horizon commendation, rewarding you with The Pirate Lord’s jacket to change up your Sea of Thieves outfit. If you complete all Maiden Voyage Commendations, you get another called The Adventure Begins. Have no fear if you miss any, as you can repeat the tutorial any time, which is often part of the fun.
