The Next Dragon’s Dogma Has a Major Choice Ahead of It

Highlights

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2 impresses with its familiar gameplay, but may need to consider shaking things up for its eventual sequel.
  • Fans of Dragon’s Dogma series may see a third installment at some point given the sequel’s success, though it is currently unconfirmed.
  • If It does happen, Capcom may want to be more innovative than it was with Dragon’s Dogma 2, as there likely will not be another 10-year wait that makes it possible to justify an incredibly similar experience.

After waiting for over a decade, Dragon’s Dogma fans were finally treated to the hotly anticipated follow-up earlier this year. Dragon’s Dogma 2 once again showed just what makes this fantasy RPG series so special, though while it was a fantastic experience, some fans also found that it was almost identical to its predecessor in practically every way. And even though that paid off immensely this time around, Dragon’s Dogma 2‘s eventual sequel may not want to follow that same path.

There is no news on when, or if, Dragon’s Dogma 2 will get a sequel. However, the long-awaited sequel has been pretty popular, so there is a strong chance players will see a follow-up at some point. Yet, when it does finally come out, Capcom will be faced with a major choice. It can either keep going down this path by delivering a tried-and-true RPG, or it can attempt to shake things up considerably in the next chapter. Whatever choice Capcom makes could have major ramifications for the franchise as a whole, so there may be a lot of pressure to get it right.

One of the most immersive parts of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the way the game treats cooking at camp, but this feature’s main gimmick should stay limited.

Dragon’s Dogma 3 Might be Faced With a Major Decision

The Dragon’s Dogma Series Has Not Evolved Much

In 2012, RPG fans were introduced to games-most-rewarding-exploration/”>the exciting world of Dragon’s Dogma. Unlike other RPGs, this game threw players into a world with little direction for how to navigate it. On top of that, its dynamic systems made it all feel extremely alive, the classes were a joy to play, and the Pawn system served as a fantastic addition to the formula. All of that made for an unforgettable RPG that fans had been waiting years to see continued, which Capcom finally delivered in 2024 with Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 took everything good about the first game and just did it again. While the studio did inject some new things into the experience, the majority of it felt rather similar to that first outing. Some may have wanted a bit more innovation for this second chapter, but after over a decade of similar RPGs, the sequel still felt fairly refreshing. Plus, the gameplay and world were solid back in 2012, and they continue to be some of the best that the RPG genre offers in 2024.

The Next Chapter Has to Decide If It Wants to Shake Things Up a Bit

Redoing the first Dragon’s Dogma with a fresh coat of paint seemed to pay off for Capcom, yet it might not a second time around. Since it had been so long since the first game, many players were just yearning for that type of RPG to make its return. Additionally, it served as a great way to introduce new people to the experience. However, if Dragon’s Dogma 2 proves to be a success, then a third one will likely not take 10 years to release. And if it comes out sooner, repeating the same game a second time might not have the same benefits.

While Dragon’s Dogma 3 does not have to be a completely different game, it may be better if Capcom did expand upon the concept it has gone back to twice. Maybe it injects countless more Vocations into the mix, or redoes the Pawn system a bit, or tells a wildly different story, or just brings players to an extremely unique locale. Whatever choice the studio makes, as long as it matches the quality of the first two games, RPG fans will likely flock to it.

There is no news on a Dragon’s Dogma 3, but if it does eventually happen, it will be facing a pretty major choice. Capcom could just repeat what it did with the sequel by slightly improving on the franchise’s foundations, or it could shake up the entire concept considerably somehow. That may sound like an impossible decision, but whatever choice the studio makes, hopefully it results in another fantastic adventure for fans to enjoy.
