The trailer for the cancelled live-service Spider-Man The Great Web game from Insomniac appears online

A trailer for a cancelled live-service Spider-Man game from Insomniac has popped up online, giving us a brief glimpse at a title that looked ready to be revealed to the world.

A few months ago Insomniac games was hit by a massive data breach that resulted in heaps of data being spread across the Internet. The leak contained all sorts of information about Insomniac, PlayStation, financials and pretty much every game the company is planning on releasing in the coming years. Within the data, people found a host of concept art and images about a cancelled game titled Spider-Man: The Great Web. Plenty of interesting details can be gleaned, such as Morlun, a controversial character who was central to the Spider-Verse comic from 2014

Spider-Man: The Great Web was planned to be a 5-person co-op game where players would team up to battle the Sinister Six across the multiverse, but the project was canned due to worry about its long-term viability.

Somebody managed to find a trailer for the game in the Insomniac leak, and based on what we see, it looks like the trailer was a mock-up made to sell Sony on the concept. Some other sites have reported it as looking like an announcement trailer, but I think it’s too rough around the edges for that. The character models are based on existing skins, except Spider-Gwen, the portals are taken straight out of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and the comic book panels are from classic Spidey comics. Spider-Man voice-actor Yuri Lowenthal provides the voiceover for the trailer which shows Miles Morales teaming up with the likes of Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Punk and more. The leaks also mention things like character customisation.

“New York City. Nothing in the whole world I wouldn’t do for this big, beautiful apple. One moment you’re scarfing down a slice from Vinnie’s, the next – you’re stopping a super-villain prison break. Sometimes you can swing it as a lone wolf, but you’re way better off with some friends. I’ve seen the Sinister Six before… But never so methodical – so savage. I don’t think I’m going to be enough this time, guys. But together, we just might be.” narrates Peter Parker.

The game obviously uses assets already made for the three existing Spider-Man games from Insomniac, which makes sense. We know from the leaks that the budget for Spider-Man 2 was $315 million, so Insomniac and Sony may have been looking for ways to squeeze out an extra game using existing assets to help balance costs.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also hinted towards the existence of this game by collecting the Spider-Bots, a mission that ends up tying the game into the Spider-Verse movies.

While The Great Web may have been cancelled, there’s still a chance it will find new life in Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. In the leaked concept art we see designs for The Green Goblin, for example, and it’s possible that The Great Web might be shrunk down and added into Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 in some sort of multiplayer mode akin to Ghost of Tsushima: Legends.

Personally, the live service aspect doesn’t interest me, but the idea of a co-op Spidey game involving a host of Wall-Crawlers from across the universe sounds pretty awesome. Strip out the live service and release it as a cheaper standalone, like Miles Morales, and I would have snapped it up.
