Yoga and Horror are not known for being connected in any way, but MIND BODY SPIRIT is here to change that. The film distributed by WELCOME VILLAIN FILMS is a “found footage” concept similar to Paranormal Activity, that’s where the similarities end.

Anya (Sarah J. Bartholomew), an aspiring yoga influencer, embarks on a ritual practice left behind by her estranged grandmother. What starts as a spiritual self-help guide quickly evolves into something more sinister. As Anya becomes obsessed with the mysterious power of the practice, she unwittingly unleashes an otherworldly entity that begins to take control of her life — and her videos. Now Anya must race to unlock the truth before her descent into madness threatens to consume her mind, body and spirit.

Directors Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda weave a story with Yoga at the forefront. The concept is original and interesting. The story does take a bit to get going on the Horror, but when it does the film is at its best.

Bartholomew as Anya is the central character and gets most of the screen time. This is a good time as she is believable in most elements within MIND BODY SOUL. Her calm upbeat demeanour as wanna be influencer when the film starts starkly contrasts her descent into darkness.

Anya upon discovering a hidden room in her grandmother’s house and finding a book which mentions her, set the woman down a dark path. The book holds more secrets than the young woman knows. This plot point isn’t something new in the Horror genre, but it does have a very unique way of pushing the darkness forward.

Less is more for the effects and on-screen scares. Sure, there are a handful of gruesome scenes, but the film relies on off-screen frights to carry the audience on this Horror journey. There are a few lulls throughout the runtime too. This happens when a fellow Yoga influencer named Kenzi (Madi Bready). She’s bubbly and abrasive in the nicest way. The character is supposed to be, but some of the interactions slow down the story’s momentum.

MIND BODY SPIRIT is worth viewing for the performance from Sarah J. Bartholomew. The concept of the film is also a major plus in its favour. On the Horror side of things, the movie is sadly not as original. The POV camera angles and similar elements don’t work as well as they should. The film isn’t as scary as it could be just because we’ve seen these certain things before.
