Everything You Need to Know

“You need to be more on it”: 12 unheard radio exchanges from the Chinese GP

Un-broadcast radio messages from last weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix reveal how Aston Martin blamed Carlos Sainz Jnr for the collision between Lance Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo, how Haas played a strategic masterstroke at the start, why Pierre Gasly was frustrated with his team’s tactics and more.

Plus, why did it take so long for the race to restart following the two Safety Car periods, and how Zhou Guanyu was unaware Formula 1 planned a special post-race celebration for him.

Hulkenberg’s early stop

Whoever was first into the pits stood to claim an advantage by getting onto fresher tyres before their rivals. Haas made sure Nico Hulkenberg pulled it off with a very late call for him to pit – so late, in fact, he admitted he anticipated it.

Lap: 8/56 HUL: 1’49.064
Gannon Box now, Nico, box now.
Hulkenberg Fucking hell! Bit late. I just second-guessed there, that was too late.

“We’re Racing Ferrari, no?”

Lando Norris, McLaren, Shanghai International Circuit, 2024
McLaren were surprised by their pace in Shanghai

Early in the race, McLaren discovered to their surprise their pace was strong compared to rivals Ferrari. Lando Norris encouraged his team to forget about covering off rivals such as Fernando Alonso and George Russell and focus on out-running the Ferrari pair. It paid off.

Lap: 13/56 NOR: 1’41.805
Norris Yeah pace is good. The pace seems strong. Let’s maximise our race. Let’s not get too hung up on the people who boxed. We’re in a good position.
Joseph Lando we agree the pace looks good. Last lap Leclerc did a 41.9, Sainz did a 42.6, we think we’re Racing them.
Lap: 16/56 NOR: 1’41.795
Joseph Lando just a bit of a question for you. Alonso’s 27.3, If we pitted ahead of him and gave them free air Ferraris might just extend, I’m not sure. Or we’d have to come up behind Alonso and pass him later. Alonso on a hard tyre.
Lap: 17/56 NOR: 1’41.700
Norris We’re Racing Ferrari, no?
Joseph We understand that. Just trying to think how best to beat them. In terms of clean air ahead of Alonso or extend similar to them?
Norris I think extend with them.
Joseph Understood.
Lap: 20/56 NOR: 1’42.167
Joseph Lando, question: How are the tyres? Gap to Alonso 24.4, Russell 27.1. Would you be happy behind one car? Would you be happy behind two cars?
Norris I think I’d overtake both.
Joseph Understood. And tyre update please.

When Valtteri Bottas came to a stop, Norris was braced to pit if a Virtual Safety Car or Safety Car period began. To his frustration, the VSC was called moments after he passed the pit lane entrance.

To his relief, the VSC period continued for over a lap, and he was able to pit without losing time to the Ferraris.

Lap: 21/56 NOR: 1’43.566
Norris Yeah, they’re hanging on. I mean, they’re getting a little bit worse, but obviously not bad.
Joseph Yellow flags from here to turn 11. Bottas has stopped. Both Safety Car windows are open, please confirm.
Norris Yeah, there’s debris on-track. They need to do the Safety Car or VSC. A lot of debris on-track.
Norris Norris passes the pit lane entrance and the Virtual Safety Car is deployed.
Fucking joking me.
Joseph Tell me about it.
Lap: 22/56 NOR: 2’18.646
Norris Oh, I fucking knew it.
Norris Box, correct?
Joseph Yes.
Norris I think we’ve got to box anyway, yeah?

Leclerc queries Alonso

Several drivers darted into the pits to change tyres when the VSC period began, including Leclerc. He was surprised to emerge from the pits slightly behind Fernando Alonso, who got to the crucial Safety Car Line Two before him. Leclerc urged his team to check Alonso had followed the rules, and as no action was taken, it appears he did.

Lap: 21/56 LEC: 1’51.969
Marcos Padros Virtual Safety Car deployed
Box now. Box now. Box, box. And going for hard. Will be close with Alonso, pit exit. Brake balance minus one. Close with Alonso at pit exit.
Lap: 22/56 LEC: 2’30.205
Leclerc Alonso gets ahead of him
Fuck.
Marcos Padros So Alonso has a 10-lap used hard.
Leclerc Let’s check if he was positive at the line, because now he’s over my delta.
Marcos Padros Copy that.
Leclerc How fast will be the VSC?

Gasly’s Hamilton frustration

Another close call occured at the pit exit line between Lewis Hamilton and Pierre Gasly. After examining footage of the moment the pair reached the line, Alpine told their driver they had to let Hamilton by. Gasly was unimpressed:

Lap: 21/56 HAM: 2’02.779, GAS: 2’03.250
Hamilton …dropping off. Gasly Under Virtual Safety Car conditions.
Struggling understeer apex turn three and apex turn nine. Still some bouncing turn eight.
Bonnington So VSC. VSC. Keep the delta positive. Howard Okay, copy that. So we’re going to stay out Pierre. We’ll stay out unless this goes real.
Hamilton Something’s wrong, mate. The tyres are dead, already.
Bonnington Yep, copy Lewis. We’ve certainly given them a hard time.
Hamilton I’m about to lose a place to the car behind.
Bonnington Okay, let us know what you want on flap if we do come in.
Bonnington Okay Lewis, so we’ll box, box. Let us know on flap.
Lap: 22/56 HAM: 2’29.397, GAS: 2’14.094
Bonnington Hamilton leaves the pits
So you’re going to have Gasly and Magnussen with you.
Howard Gasly passes the pit lane entrance, Hamilton appears alongside him and they reach the Safety Car Line Two together
So suggest a bit more management in eight to help turn nine.
Bonnington Hamilton emerges ahead of Gasly
So you were ahead. And we’ll go strat mode ‘one’. So, Lewis, we’ll need to bring these tyres in nice and steady when this gets going again. So it’s going to be management turns seven and eight and the lift-and-coast does look efficient.
Gasly I don’t know if I was ahead. Let me know if I was ahead of the Mercedes.
Hamilton Hamilton is overtaken by Gasly under VSC at turn seven
I’ve just been overtaken. He just overtook me.
Howard Okay we’ll look.
Bonnington We believe you should have the position. Will clarify. Gasly Guys, you need to be more on it. You should have told me that Lewis was arriving.
Hamilton Either way, he’s just overtaken me on the outside. Howard Copy that mate, we’re looking at it.
Bonnington As Gasly slows on the exit of turn ten to allow Hamilton to re-pass
So according to our systems, you crossed the Safety Car 2 line first, so it should be your position.
Gasly Let me know if I was ahead. I think I passed the line in front.
Howard And Pierre we need to let Hamilton by, let Hamilton through.
Gasly Yeah, we should have been ahead for sure. I need you guys to be more on it for this kind of situation. I could have pushed more.
Howard Copy mate. Just keep an eye on your delta.

Gasly could console himself with the fact Alpine had at least advised him what to do. In another similar incident, Williams failed to tell Logan Sargeant he needed to let Nico Hulkenberg overtake him, and he ended up collecting a 10-second time penalty.

“It was maybe Sainz”

Racing-formula-one-world-championship-chinese-grand-prix-race-day-shanghai-china-132/” rel=”attachment wp-att-532597″>Daniel Ricciardo, RB, Shanghai International Circuit, 2024
Blame flew in all directions after Stroll slammed into the rear of Ricciardo

At the end of the subsequent Safety Car period, the field bunched up approaching turn 14, and Lance Stroll clattered into the back of Daniel Ricciardo. He struck the RB with enough force to send it into the McLaren of Oscar Piastri in front of them.

Stroll and Ricciardo blamed each other, but the stewards held the Aston Martin driver responsible. He was given a penalty, but at the end of the race Stroll’s race engineer suggested Carlos Sainz Jnr had been at fault.

Lap: 26/56 STR: 2’35.395, RIC: 2’32.359
Vizard Just reminder Lance it’s no overtaking until the control line. Ricciardo Yeah I got hit. Yeah I got fucking it.
Stroll This idiot just slammed on the brake, check wing damage.
Lap: 27/56 STR: 3’41.520, RIC: 1’54.803
Stroll Stroll arrives in the pit lane.
Replace the wing.
Hamelin Copy. We’re checking, we’re checking. Keep us posted on the car.
Ricciardo Keep checking but something’s definitely got some damage.
Hamelin Copy that we can’t see anything on data currently. We’ll keep checking, can’t see anything on data.
Ricciardo The Haas also passed before the Safety Car line.
Hamelin Confirmed. Data That okay so far. Keep the head down.
Ricciardo Yeah I’ll keep pushing but something’s definitely up.
Hamelin Confirmed we have small damage we are down on load. Mode seven. Safety Car, Safety Car.
Ricciardo Should I box? Let me know.
Hamelin Stay out. Stay out. Okay Daniel we do have damage on the floor. We’re assessing the balance was much, but we are down on load. We are assessing numbers.
Lap: 35/56 STR: 1’45.678
Vizard Okay Lance so we’ve been given a 10-second penalty for the incident under the safety car. We’d like to box this lap and serve it. So box this lap, it’ll be a 10-second penalty.
Stroll Unbelievable, man. Such a joke.
Chequered flag
Vizard Okay, that’s the chequered flag. Unlucky there, mate. That was going really well to start with. First two stints were going good until that safety car. So for info that was a big concertina, caught a few out, I think it was maybe Sainz just caused that down the front somewhere.
Stroll Yeah. So ridiculous, man. That the whole train in front of me just stopped. Twice, even down the main straight there was like someone that braked. And then again at the hairpin.
Vizard Yeah, no, we saw it definitely wasn’t you. It was kind of chaos, wasn’t it? Not very good driving there for them.

Oblivious Piastri

Racing-formula-one-world-championship-chinese-grand-prix-race-day-shanghai-china-73/”>Oscar Piastri, McLaren, Shanghai International Circuit, 2024
Piastri didn’t know he’d been hit until his team told him

Meanwhile Piastri was unaware he’d been hit, until he experienced the degraded handling of his McLaren resulting from his damaged diffuser.

Lap: 29/56 PIA: 2’25.655
Stallard So Oscar we see some damage from the restart contact. We have lost… equivalent to three two four holes of front wing flap. We’re going to need to manage that with the driving and the toys.
Lap: 30/56 PIA: 2’21.071
Piastri Copy. I don’t remember having any contact but okay.
Stallard So there was contact with Ricciardo, who touched the back of our car in 14, and we have damage at the rear there.
Piastri Ah, okay.
Stallard But give us an update on the balance once you get into some proper laps.
Piastri So do I have three holes less front wing now or more?
Stallard Equivalent to more.
Stallard So, Oscar, we can confirm from pictures we do have diffuser damage so the balance will be more forwards.

“I’m passing him anyway”

Racing-formula-one-world-championship-chinese-grand-prix-sprint-and-qualifying-day-shanghai-china-26/” rel=”attachment wp-att-532285″>Nico Hulkenberg, Haas, Shanghai International Circuit, 2024
Ricciardo landed himself in trouble by overtaking Hulkenberg under Safety Car conditions

Ricciardo’s frustration over the Stroll incident got the better of him. Hulkenberg had passed him while contact was made, and behind the Safety Car he chose to re-pass the Haas driver without waiting for his team to advise him.

This was a costly mistake. The stewards penalised Ricciardo for overtaking under the Safety Car, and he will have a three-place driver penalty at the Miami Grand Prix.

Lap: 28/56 RIC: 2’26.589
Ricciardo What a fucking arsehole, man. Yeah, let me pass Hulkenberg yeah?
Hamelin Stand by, I’ll keep you posted. Ricciardo passes Hulkenberg
Mode 14.
Ricciardo Yeah I’m passing him anyway. It’s my position.
Hamelin Copy Daniel.
Ricciardo And I’m assuming if we box, it’s not repairable.
Hamelin It’s floor damage, so we keep assessing. I’ll keep you posted.
Okay Daniel so we have a rearward balance and we are down on load. We keep assessing. For now keep your head down and see what we can do to the end.
Ricciardo Understood. There’s still shit all over the track before last corner, before the hairpin, turn 11.

RB tried to keep Ricciardo in the race, but to his obvious disappointment he was forced to retire. He remains yet to score a point this year, and had been ninth before Stroll hit him.

Lap: 29/56 RIC: 2’25.366
Hamelin Copy.
Ricciardo They also didn’t clean turn 11, there’s grass all over the track.
Hamelin We have a double yellow between tun, 14 and 15. Okay Daniel so we’ll have to see where we are with balance when we restart. Then will assess switches required. It’s very hard to pre-empt what we’re going to get now.
Ricciardo Yeah, I already felt, a lot of understeer turning right.
Hamelin Please repeat, Daniel.
Ricciardo Already on that half a lap, a lot of understeer, especially starting right.
Hamelin Okay. Double yellow is gone between 14 and 16. Okay Daniel you can look at the dash. Front tyres are still going down, but same for everyone. Reminder we’re on medium. Most of the other cars are on hard. We have Alonso ahead of you on soft. We can consider going down on diff entry for restart if you think understeer will be the main issue.
Lap: 30/56 RIC: 2’21.054
Ricciardo Understood. I think, er…
Hamelin Yeah, it will be difficult, mate. I share your frustration.
Hamelin Mode 11, please. Okay the double yellow is gone again between 14 and 16. And you’re doing good with your brakes, you’re staying in a good place. And we’ve reported turn 11.
Lap: 31/56 RIC: 2’23.797
Hamelin And Safety Car in this lap. And heads-up, Daniel: Also the cars around you have damage. I’ve just seen Piastri has floor damage. Charge on, mode three in the background. We’ll try to do what we can and you know the plan for end of race.
Hamelin Okay offset is good. And it will be charge off before the last corner, Racing from the line.
Lap: 32/56 RIC: 1’44.075
Ricciardo Restart
I got no fucking rear on exits.
Hamelin Mode seven. Copy that.
Lap: 33/56 RIC: 1’55.415
Hamelin DRS enabled. I’ll keep you posted.
Hamelin Okay Daniel that will be box, box.
Ricciardo Understood.
Hamelin Okay Daniel there is too much damage. Too much damage. We retire the car. We have far too much damage now. Box, box.
Ricciardo Understood.
Lap: 34/56 RIC:
Hamelin Okay if you can stop in front of the garage and switch off, please. Yeah I have no words, Daniel. Pace was very strong there before the Safety Car.
Ricciardo Yeah, I could go off but I’ll save it.
Hamelin Yeah, he’s got a penalty, but obviously it doesn’t help us.

Debris delay

Some driver queried why it took so long for the race to restart after the two interruptions. On each occasion it was because other drivers had reported debris on the track:

Lap: 23/56 ALO: 2’17.153, HUL: 2’17.671
Alonso Who benefits from this? Leclerc, Norris?
Cronin Yeah. So Leclerc, Norris. Russell and Piastri aame as us. Sainz same as us. It’s okay for us the moment, it’s all okay.
Cronin Okay so this is a Safety Car.
Alonso The car is stuck there? They need maybe the red flag or no?
Cronin Fernando we are boxing this lap.
Alonso Copy.
Lap: 25/56 ALO: 2’15.201, HUL: 1’59.529
Cronin We’ve got the track clear message.
Alonso At turn 16
There is a lot of grass the inside of turn 11. Maybe they can do something.
Lap: 26/56 ALO: 2’31.709, HUL: 2’27.733
Cronin Understood Fernando so a lot of grass turn 11.
Alonso We cannot overtake until… finish line?
Cronin Yeah finish line, exactly.

Alonso had good reason to want the Safety Car to stay out longer as he had switched to the soft tyres while others were on hards. But he wasn’t the only driver drawing race control’s attention to debris on the track:

Lap: 27/56 ALO: 1’50.392, HUL: 1’54.261
Gannon Stroll crashes into Ricciardo ahead of Hulkenberg
Mode push, mode push. Safety Car. Safety Car. Stay out. Positive delta time and stay out, Nio.
Hulkenberg That was super-weird. I think the Aston crashed into an AlphaTauri. A bit confusing.
Gannon Yes, that is exactly what happened.
Lap: 28/56 ALO: 2’30.078, HUL: 2’29.564
Hulkenberg There is part here between 14 and 15. Some carbon part in the middle of the straight.
Gannon Copy that, we’ll report it. So it’s two times past the line. So you no delta the safety car has leader Verstappen. So it is now a yellow for that debris that you reported. And that debris has been cleared. Still talking about the Ricciardo situation?
Lap: 29/56 ALO: 2’25.818, HUL: 2’25.148
Hulkenberg So that debris is still there.
Lap: 30/56 ALO: 2’22.100, HUL: 2’21.361
Gannon Copy, we’ll report it again. So we’re still waiting for resolution on the Ricciardo thing, but if it doesn’t get swapped back around, in any case, he has some damage and he has older mediums.

Leclerc’s misunderstanding

Racing-formula-one-world-championship-chinese-grand-prix-race-day-shanghai-china-68/”>Charles Leclerc, Sergio Perez
Leclerc couldn’t make sense of his race engineer’s message

Towards the end of the race, Leclerc was puzzled by a message from his race engineer:

Lap: 55/56 LEC: 1’40.882
Marcos Padros And try original line turns seven-eight for comparison.
Leclerc What?
Marcos Padros Try original line turn, seven and eight.
Leclerc I don’t understand you. How is that a line? What the hell is that?
Marcos Padros Original line – like the beginning of the race.
Marcos Padros Slippery track reported where you are for debris, we believe right-hand side.
Leclerc Original line, you said?
Marcos Padros Original, yes.
Leclerc What the hell does that mean?
Lap: 56/56 LEC: 1’40.568
Marcos Padros Just forget it, it’s last lap.
Chequered flag
Leclerc We were much slower than McLaren today. I mean, there was nothing I could have done more at turn one-two-three. For me it has been an enigma. I think we’ll have to look into it because I’ve tried literally everything.
Marcos Padros Yeah copy that. Plenty to analyse in it.

Norris’ pit error

Lando Norris, McLaren, Shanghai International Circuit, 2024
Norris slipped up after taking the chequered flag

Having finished in the top three, Norris was supposed to park on the pit straight, but drove into the pits instead. His team discouraged him from reversing back onto the track. In a series of messages which weren’t broadcast, Norris ribbed his race engineer about the error.

Chequered flag
Joseph Lando, driver of the day.
Norris Oh my God! Thank you so much. I didn’t know I had so many Chinese supporters, but it’s incredible. So thank you very much. Oh I’ll have to say it, but happy birthday mum for yesterday. I guess this one was for you. Love you, mum.
Norris Norris begins driving into the pit lane entrance, then stops, wondering if he’s supposed to park on the grid.
Where do I, do I go into the pit lane or not? Why’ve you not told me this? Everyone’s gone onto the grid.
Joseph Apologies, should have gone through the grid, my bad.
Norris Okay.
Joseph So I suggest stopping in front of the FIA garage, and then we can walk out to the grid.
Norris I’ve got this I think.
Joseph Lando if you can keep moving please. Do not reverse, mate, do not reverse, just drive forwards.
Norris I didn’t reverse.
Joseph I see what you did.
Norris Winding each other up
Yes, Will, should be on the grid.
Joseph My bad. Too busy…
Norris Concentrate, Will, concentrate. Breathe, Will.
Joseph All right, all right.

Gasly’s concern

A mechanic was knocked over during one of Pierre Gasly’s pit stops when he was incorrectly told to leave too soon. After taking the chequered flag, Gasly checked up on his condition:

Chequered flag
Gasly How’s the mechanic?
Howard Yep. Everyone here is all good.
Gasly Okay.
Howard Yep. No injuries.
Gasly All right.
Howard Yeah. Thanks for your concern.
Gasly I just got to review because I went at the green and then it went red again. But glad he’s fine.
Howard Yeah, we’ll give it a good look. Thanks, buddy.

Zhou unaware of post-race plan

Racing-formula-one-world-championship-chinese-grand-prix-race-day-shanghai-china-131/”>Zhou Guanyu, Sauber, Shanghai International Circuit, 2024
Zhou got to celebrate with his fans after finishing 14th

For Zhou’s home race, Formula 1 arranged a special celebration to take place after he took the chequered flag. Although it was mentioned in the pre-race notes, it came as a surprise to the local racer, who emerged from his car on the start/finish straight to the cheers of the crowd:

Chequered flag
Benisi We finish P14, Zhou, P14.
Zhou Yeah. The first stint was the tough one. I just didn’t really have the grip.
Benisi Last one you did a good job there.
Alunni Bravi Tough race but enjoy this moment in front of your fans. A special moment for you, your family. We will have other opportunities to score points, but today’s your day, Zhou.
Zhou Yeah thanks. Yeah it’s been amazing so far. ‘course love to be in the points but it’s been very special to be here.
Alunni Bravi We’ll keep fighting together Zhou, we’ll keep fighting.
Zhou Come to the garage?
Benisi Go to the finish line, Zhou. Go to the finish line.
Benisi Zhou, continue on track, go to the start-finish line and enjoy this moment, man.
Zhou Okay, thank you man.
Benisi And full switch off procedure there.
Zhou Thanks guys. Thanks also the mechanics, being a more consistent pit stop. Let’s keep working.
