Riccardo Patrese believes “if Adrian Newey comes, Ferrari will win”

Italian former Racing driver Riccardo Patrese, who raced in Formula One from 1977 to 1993, has spoken about the possible arrival of Adrian Newey at Scuderia Ferrari, a difficult but extremely profitable deal.

Riccardo Patrese is confident that the Maranello team will win with Adrian Newey. The former Italian Formula 1 driver, a winner of six Grands Prix, told the Italian daily newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport about his friendship with the English engineer. Their relationship began when Adrian Newey joined Williams in 1990, marking the start of the team’s last dominant Formula 1 season.

It’s a hectic season in Formula 1. It started with the deadly boredom of a fundamentally frozen drivers’ market but soon left stability behind to make room for sheer madness. First, there was Lewis Hamilton’s decision, after a lifetime with the Mercedes family, to sign with Scuderia Ferrari. Then the Christian Horner case, which shook the foundations of Red Bull, even projecting Max Verstappen towards Brackley.

Now it’s Adrian Newey’s turn, who is exiting from Milton Keynes. Having joined the Red Bull team in 2006, he was the architect behind Sebastian Vettel’s consecutive titles first, and Max Verstappen’s thereafter. Now in a more withdrawn role, making way for rising stars Pierre Waché and Enrico Balbo, he is ready for one last new challenge. A second youth to return to winning.

“Definitely yes, [the investment to sign Adrian Newey] is worth it,” Riccardo Patrese commented to La Gazzetta dello Sport. “If Adrian comes, we win. We just have to see if he really comes, because I know him well, we are friends, during my years at Williams we built a great rapport, and I know that he is very comfortable at home, he loves being in England.” – he explained.

“So I don’t know: that he’s leaving Red Bull and could come to Ferrari, I’m reading about it in the newspapers,” concluded the former driver. “I would be happy about it, so I could go visit him and see him more often.
