Todd Howard Has No Plans To Retire, He’s Having “Too Much Fun”

Highlights

  • Todd Howard, director of Bethesda, doesn’t have plans to retire anytime soon – he loves what he does and enjoys playing games.
  • Howard mentions that Bethesda’s games take time due to focusing on quality, despite not liking the long wait for releases.
  • Howard hopes to continue making games for as long as possible, with no plans of retirement in sight for now.

We all know how long Bethesda takes to make their games. It’s an excruciating wait for fans of titles like The Elder Scrolls 6 or another Fallout game which will take years in development, and of course, thoughts turn to how long the director and executive producer of the game’s company, Todd Howard, will be around for. No, we aren’t suggesting in terms of his death – that would be a bit weird and morbid, but rather, how long will he actually be at Bethesda before he considers retirement?

Thankfully, Howard fans don’t have to ponder this question any further, as the popular Kinda Funny games YouTube channel delves into this matter while recently chatting with the Bethesda boss.

Starfield players just can’t get enough of the game’s new map system.

In an interview with Kinda Funny games‘ Greg Miller, Todd Howard talked all things Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Starfield, and, of course, his retirement from Bethesda one day. Over recent years, there have been comments and wonderment about Howard’s retirement and when it would happen since he is fast approaching 54 years old. Since the games take so long to make, Miller asked Howard how much thought he had put into finally saying goodbye to Bethesda so that he could spend more time with his family.

“I don’t want to ever stop, it’s too much fun” replied Howard. “I love the work, I love the products and if I didn’t make these games, I’d just be playing them all of the time” Howard states that even at the weekends, he plays Fallout 76 and Fallout 4, and it’s how he likes to spend his downtime, regardless.

Going into Bethesda’s game development history, Howard does acknowledge that these titles do take a long time to make due to ensuring they are of the “highest quality” and that he doesn’t enjoy having to wait that long either, but he also needs to focus on output and “getting it right”.

Finally coming around to the retirement hotspot question, Howard said he “hopes to do it as long as possible” and he has “no plans on retiring or anything like that.” So there we have it, it looks like we will be seeing Howard’s face for a long time to come. If you’ve been wondering what games he has currently been playing, other than Bethesda’s own, Diablo 4 and Forza Motorsport 7 have been on his playlist too. “I’m a big Forza fan and I know those folks really well at Turn 10, so I love the new game.”
